AIM: Apart from various typical gastrointestinal symptoms, coeliac disease may have its clinical manifestations in the oral cavity which is the entrance of the gastrointestinal tract. METHODS: A systematic review of literature was performed using the following databases: Medline, Scopus, EBSCOhost and Cochrane Library for Systematic Review. INCLUSION CRITERIA: observational or experimental original studies published in English with full text available between January 2000 and December 2022, regarding children and adolescents under the age of 20. Risk of bias was determined with the use of Risk Of Bias In Non-randomised Studies of Exposure. RESULTS: Thirty-four studies were included in the review. The analysis confirmed a higher prevalence of numerous oral manifestations in coeliac disease concerning both hard and soft tissues. Our study found the prevalence of dental enamel defects to be at the level of 17.9%-83.5% (P value <0.047) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis of 8.3%-69% (P value <0.039). CONCLUSION: Oral manifestations may precede gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients presenting such manifestations should be screened for coeliac disease. The cooperation of gastroenterologists and dentists could lead to an increased detectability of coeliac disease.

Adamantiades-Behçet disease is an inflammatory, vascular disease of unknown etiology. The disease is named after two physicians, Benediktos Adamantiades and Hulȗsi Behçet, who both made significant contributions to the study of the disease. It was probably first described by Hippocrates in 500 BCE. Adamantiades-Behçet disease is most common in the region encompassing the ancient trade route known as the Silk Road. In Turkey, the disease is estimated to affect 80 to 370 people per 100,000 inhabitants, and it is also the country with the highest incidence rate. The frequency of the disease associated with the clinical picture differs from the origin of the onset. The disease is characterized by recurrent aphthous ulcers of the mouth, genitals, skin lesions, and eye lesions. The disease process can also involve other organs, including the joints, nervous system, large vessels, heart, and gastrointestinal tract. Aphthous oral ulcers appear as the first harbinger of the disease and affect almost all patients (97%-99%). The scientific interest in Adamantiades-Behçet disease has increased exponentially in the past decade.

Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases affecting an approximate 25% of the world's population. Some common etiological factors are genetics, nutritional deficiencies, stress and immune dysfunction. There is currently no specific medication to treat the condition but RAS tends to heal by itself within a week or two. We aimed to explore about the prevalence and related risk factors of recurrent aphthous ulcers among college students aged 18-30 years who had been affected within the preceding six months prior to the study duration. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 681 students from four colleges in Mangalore, Karnataka, India after obtaining the approval for the same from the respective colleges. Consenting participants returned a survey containing various questions. The collected data was then analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee. Results: Of the 681 participants, 322 (47.2%) were affected with RAS in the past six months which included 131 (40.6%) males and 191 (59.3%) females. Single mouth ulcers were the most common presentation seen among the study participants (74.2%). Factors showing statistically significant association were: family history of RAS (P < 0.001), known diabetics (P < 0.001), history of smoking (P < 0.001), oral trauma (P < 0.001), history of wearing braces/dentures (P < 0.001) as well as those using toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulphate (P < 0.001), stress and lack of sleep (P < 0.001). The most common form of medication used were topical agents (43.1%) (P < 0.001). Conclusions: There was a statistically significant association between the occurrence of RAS and family history of RAS, diabetes, smoking, history of braces/dentures, oral trauma, sodium lauryl sulphate toothpastes, lack of sleep, stress, menstruation, consumption of particular foods and beverages. Further research is needed in this field to truly understand the prevalence and risk factors of RAS and to help in discovering a treatment modality for this condition.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effects of various biochemical agents on the etiopathogenesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). METHODS: We enrolled 70 RAS patients and 70 healthy volunteers. Peripheral venous blood samples were collected. We performed complete blood counts, then measured the levels of ferritin, vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, thyroid-stimulating hormone, T3, T4, and 25-hydroxy D3. RESULTS: The groups did not differ in terms of age (p = 0.912) or sex (p = 0.612). The levels of ferritin and 25-hydroxy vitamin D were significantly lower in RAS patients (both p Ë‚ 0.05). CONCLUSION: Vitamin D and/or ferritin deficiency may induce RAS. Measurements of vitamin D and ferritin may assist diagnosis and follow-up.

Background: Reports of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome from developing countries are sparse. Recognizing PFAPA is often challenging in these regions due to a higher incidence of infectious illnesses and significant resource constraints. Herein, we present our experience from North India regarding the diagnosis and management of PFAPA syndrome. Methods: We reviewed cases of non-monogenic periodic fever syndrome diagnosed at our center from January 2011 to December 2021. A total of 17 children who fulfilled the Marshall criteria for PFAPA syndrome were included. Data regarding basic clinical features, treatment/outcome, and performance of the recently proposed Eurofever/PRINTO and Takeuchi criteria were analyzed. Results: Besides recurrent fever, the triad of oral aphthae, pharyngitis, and adenitis was noted in only 18% of patients. Episodes of exudative pharyngitis/tonsillitis were documented in 24%. These figures were lower than the values reported from developed countries. The Takeuchi and Eurofever/PRINTO criteria were fulfilled in 76% and 71% cases, respectively. In addition to antipyretics and supportive care, intermittent steroid therapy was the main treatment modality used. Additional treatment with colchicine (n = 3) and thalidomide (n = 1) was used successfully in a few patients. Before the diagnosis of PFAPA, all patients had received multiple courses of antimicrobials (without microbiological confirmation). These included multiple courses of antibacterials for fever, pharyngotonsillitis, and/or cervical adenitis in all patients and antivirals for fever and aphthous stomatitis in a patient. Empiric antitubercular therapy had also been administered in two patients. Conclusions: A significant proportion of patients with PFAPA seem to remain undiagnosed in the Indian subcontinent. Increased awareness and improvement in basic healthcare facilities are crucial in enhancing the recognition of PFAPA, which would eliminate the unprecedented scale of undesirable antimicrobial use in such children.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between peripheral blood micronutrient levels and 4 kinds of oral mucosal diseases (minor recurrent aphthous ulcer, angular cheilitis, cheilitis and geographic tongue) in children aged 0~14 years. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-two children with oral mucosal lesions (COML) and 65 healthy children (health control group, HC) were included. The clinical data of each group were recorded separately to compare whether there existed differences in the levels of serum water-soluble vitamins (vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, C), serum fat-soluble vitamins [vitamins A, E, K, 25(OH)D2, 25(OH)D3], zinc and serum calcium. Whether peripheral blood micronutrients were risk factors associated with the onset of COML was analyzed through disorder multiclass logistic regression with SPSS 23.0 software package. RESULTS: Peripheral blood micronutrients differed in children with minor recurrent aphthous ulcers, cheilitis, and geographic tongue (P<0.05). Compared with HC group, children in minor recurrent aphthous ulcer group had significantly lower levels of vitamin B1, B6, B7, C, A, and 25(OH)D3 (P<0.05), and relatively higher rates of vitamin B6 (50.00% vs 13.85%), vitamin B7 (36.76% vs 9.23%), 25(OH)D3 (64.71% vs 36.92%) deficiency and vitamin K excess (8.82% vs 0.00%)(P<0.005). Multiclass logistic regression analysis showed that vitamin B1, vitamin C, vitamin A deficiency, vitamin B5, and vitamin K excess were risk factors for incidence in children with minor recurrent aphthous ulcer, and each element was independent for each other. Compared with HC group, the levels of vitamin B7 and 25(OH)D3 in children with cheilitis were significantly lower(P<0.05), and the rate of vitamin B7 deficiency was significantly higher (P<0.005). Multiclass logistic regression analysis showed that vitamin B7 and vitamin A deficiency were risk factors for cheilitis in children, and the two were independent for each other. Compared with the HC group, vitamin K excess rate was significantly higher in children with geographic tongue (7.14% vs 0.00%) (P<0.005). Multiclass logistic regression analysis showed that vitamin C deficiency and vitamin K excess were risk factors for the incidence of geographic tongue, and the two were independent for each other. Compared with other groups, peripheral blood micronutrients had no correlation with the pathogenesis of angular cheilitis (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of COML is closely related to peripheral blood micronutrient levels, which suggests that children with COML need to monitor vitamin and mineral levels and supplement treatment when necessary.

BACKGROUND: Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is an autoinflammatory disease occurring in children. Although PFAPA is the most common periodic fever syndrome found in children, there are only a few studies defining the clinical characteristics and the efficacy of treatment strategies among Japanese children. This study aimed to clarify the demographic characteristics and clinical features of patients with PFAPA syndrome and to evaluate treatment efficacy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical features of children with PFAPA who visited Saitama Children's Medical Center between January and December 2019. We also evaluated treatment strategies and their efficacy; abortive treatment with corticosteroids, prophylaxis with cimetidine or colchicine, and surgical management with tonsillectomy. RESULTS: A total of 100 Japanese children (61% male) with PFAPA were included. Median age of onset was 3 years, median duration of fever episodes was 5 days, and median interval between episodes was 4 weeks. The symptoms (frequencies) were pharyngitis (89%), exudate on tonsils (71%), cervical adenitis (50%), and aphthous stomatitis (49%). Approximately 37% of patients took prednisolone for aborting fever attacks, showing a 100% response; 93% were treated with cimetidine, showing an 79.6% response, and 18% were treated with colchicine, showing a 66.7% response. Only one patient underwent tonsillectomy. CONCLUSIONS: Among Japanese children with PFAPA, 28% of them were ≥5 years with a male predominance. Pharyngitis is the most frequent symptom associated with fever. Cimetidine is suitable for initial therapy because of its safety and efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is generally regarded as the most common autoinflammatory disease, but the epidemiology of the disease is largely unknown. The objectives of this study were to estimate the annual incidence and describe the clinical features of PFAPA in a large cohort from western Sweden. METHODS: The study retrospectively included children < 18 years of age diagnosed with PFAPA between 2006 and 2017 at three hospitals: NU Hospital Group, Skaraborg Hospital and Queen Silvia Children's Hospital. Patients were identified by searching for relevant diagnostic ICD-10 codes in the comprehensive electronic medical records and data were retrieved by reviewing case records. To estimate incidence, patients with symptom onset from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2016, were included. Population data for the study area during this period were retrieved from Statistics Sweden. RESULTS: In this study, 336 patients with PFAPA were identified. Of these, 156 (46%) were girls and 180 (54%) were boys. Almost 90% of the children with PFAPA (291 patients) experienced their first symptoms before the age of 5 years and fewer than 3% presented at ages above 10 years. Pharyngitis was the most common symptom during febrile episodes, followed by cervical adenitis and aphthous stomatitis. Fourteen percent of the patients displayed atypical features, of which skin rash was the most common. To calculate incidence, 251 patients with symptom onset during the study period were identified. The mean annual incidence was estimated at 0.86/10,000 for children < 18 years of age and 2.6/10,000 for children < 5 years of age. CONCLUSIONS: This study adds to the understanding of the epidemiology of PFAPA syndrome by presenting incidence rates based on a large cohort and in different age groups in a population-based setting. It also shows the distribution of age of onset of PFAPA, with a peak in 1-year-olds and waning at older ages. Signs and symptoms of PFAPA syndrome were similar in children with symptom onset before vs. after 5 years of age.

BACKGROUND: The doctor/nurse and police officer population have some common typical characteristics of great professional pressure and night shift and past studies indicated oral mucosa lesions were closely associated with psychological factors and health-risking behaviors, however the prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and the two commonly seen oral potentially malignant disorders of oral submucosal fibrosis (OSF) and oral leukoplakia in doctor/nurse and police officer in the Betel quid chewing city of Mainland China is unknown The cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence differences of RAS, oral leukoplakia and OSF among doctor/nurse, police officer and non-doctor/nurse and non-police officer population aged 20-59 years. METHODS: RAS, OSF and oral leukoplakia were examined in doctor/nurse group (male: 659, female: 2439), police officer group (male: 839, female: 262) and non-doctor/nurse and non-police officer group (male: 7576, female: 8129) from 2020-11-01 to 2021-08-31 in Health Management Center, Xiangya Hospital in Changsha city, Hunan province. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of RAS, OSF, oral leukoplakia and oral leukoplakia combined with OSF in male and female non-doctor/nurse and non-police officer group are 8.32‰ and 10.83‰, 58.08‰ and 1.23‰, 11.75‰ and 0.25‰, 7.66‰ and 0.12‰ respectively. Compared with the non-doctor/nurse and non-police officer population, prevalence rates of RAS in male (24.27‰) and female (20.50‰) doctor/nurse population were significantly higher. Prevalence rates of OSF (21.24‰) and oral leukoplakia (3.03‰) in male doctor/nurse population were significantly less but prevalence rates of OSF (93.71‰), oral leukoplakia (20.17‰) and oral leukoplakia combined with OSF (15.42‰) for male police officer were significantly greater in comparison with male non-doctor/nurse and non-police officer group. OSF and oral leukoplakia prevalence rates were obvious lower for the female than the counterpart male group, but there were no significant differences of OSF and oral leukoplakia prevalence rates between the female non-doctor/nurse and non-police officer and female doctor/nurse group. Oral leukoplakia was not found in the female police officers. CONCLUSIONS: Doctor/nurse population have higher prevalence of RAS. Male doctors/nurses have lower prevalence of OSF and oral leukoplakia, while male police officers have higher prevalence of OSF, oral leukoplakia and oral leukoplakia combined with OSF.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is multifactorial disease with unclear etiopathogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine distribution of the angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphisms and their influence on RAS susceptibility in Czech population. METHODS: The study included 230 subjects (143 healthy controls and 87 patients with RAS) with anamnestic, clinical and laboratory data. Five ACE gene polymorphisms (rs4291/rs4305/rs4311/rs4331/rs1799752 = ACE I/D) were determined by TaqMan technique. RESULTS: The allele and genotype distributions of the studied ACE I/D polymorphisms were not significantly different between subjects with/without RAS (Pcorr > 0.05). However, carriers of II genotype were less frequent in the RAS group (OR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.21-1.12, P = 0.059). Stratified analysis by sex demonstrated lower frequency of II genotype in women (OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.09-1.17, P < 0.035, Pcorr > 0.05, respectively) than in men with RAS (P > 0.05). Moreover, the frequency of AGTGD haplotype was significantly increased in RAS patients (OR = 13.74, 95% CI = 1.70-110.79, P = 0.0012, Pcorr < 0.05). In subanalysis, TGD haplotype was significantly more frequent in RAS patients (P < 0.00001) and CGI haplotype was less frequent in RAS patients (P < 0.01), especially in women (P = 0.016, Pcorr > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that while the AGTGD and TGD haplotypes are associated with increased risk of RAS development, CGI haplotype might be one of protective factors against RAS susceptibility in Czech population.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common disease of oral mucosa, which almost attacks each individual once in their lifespan. Although plenty of factors have been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis of RAS, the aetiology of RAS is still controversial, which might lead to limited clinical therapies in accordance with each RAS patient. This review mainly illustrates recent advances in potential causes associated with RAS in detail. Deeper comprehension of the aetiology of RAS will support doctors and researchers to make a better management of RAS patients and to discover new treatments. The aetiology of RAS is complicated, hence we should take a comprehensive view into its aetiology, with multiple potential factors being considered. Sample collection of RAS patients have greatly limited the progress in the aetiology of RAS. A research model of multiagency cooperation can help achieve perfect sample collection of year-round and multiposition.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the role of Helicobacter pylori and other risk factors in recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). METHODS: Patients with functional dyspepsia responded to questionnaires regarding demographic and clinical data, anxiety and depression, and a specific RAS questionnaire. They underwent upper digestive endoscopy and H. pylori evaluation. RESULTS: 476 patients were included and of the 372 evaluated for H. pylori, 65.6% were H. pylori-positive. RAS was reported by 32.6% (155/476). In the bivariate analysis of the 372 patients evaluated for gastric H. pylori status, positive subjects had a lower RAS prevalence (29.9%; 73/244) than H. pylori-negative (41.4%; 53/128) (p = .026). Smoking (p = .005) and older age (p = .034) were also associated with a lower prevalence, while female gender (p = .032) and lower income (p = .046) presented higher RAS prevalence. In the multivariate analysis, H. pylori infection (p = .017), smoking (p = .001), and older age (p = .013) were protective factors, while lower income (p = .030) and anxiety (p = .042) were risk factors. In the multivariate analysis of all patients, female gender, lower income, and more schooling years were risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: An unexpected lower prevalence of RAS was found in H. pylori-positive patients. Smoking, sex, age, income, education, and anxiety were associated with RAS.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a condition that affects 20% of the world population and is characterized by painful ulcers in the oral mucosa. So far, the epidemiology and risk factors of RAS have been infrequently studied. Our objective was to determine whether sleep-related factors are related to the occurrence of RAS in the first prospective study carried out on this topic. METHODS: A cohort of 11210 Spanish students, 13-17 years old, was followed up for one year. Sleep disorders were assessed at baseline using a standard validated questionnaire. RESULTS: We detected 2655 new cases of RAS with a total of 287,262 person-week of follow-up. Subjects with high (4th quartile) Insomnia Index showed an incidence rate ratio (IRR) of RAS of 1.29 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-1.45), while subjects with high Hypersomnia Index presented an IRR of 1.42 (95% CI 1.26-1.61). A high score of sleep-related phenomena was also associated with an increased IRR: 1.53 (95% CI 1.37-1.69). Adolescents with high level of sleep satisfaction were at lower risk of RAS: 0.88 (95% CI 0.77-1.01). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that sleep disorders are moderately associated with RAS in adolescents.

Objectives - Aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common ulcerative lesions in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to report the characteristics of patients with aphthous stomatitis after dental implantation. Patients and Method - The study included 14 patients who were diagnosed with aphthous stomatitis. The subjects were analyzed with the respect to age, sex, patient's general health status, type, number, location, and duration of the ulcers and the number of dental implants. Results - Of the 14 cases, 64.3% were female and 35.7% were male. The mean age of patients was 57.7. In terms of general health status, 64.3% of patients did not have a remarkable disease; however, 14.3%, 14.3%, and 7.1% of cases had diabetes, hypothyroidism, and cardiac disease, respectively. The majority of the lesions have been presented as minor type (85.7%) and the mean number of the ulcers was 2.5. Labial mucosa has been affected more frequently (71.4%), followed by tongue and floor of the mouth. The most lesions (42.8%) were occurred one day after dental implant surgery. The mean number of dental implants was 3.1. Conclusion - Presence of apthous ulcers should be considered by dentists as a potential postoperative complication of dental implantation.

SUMMARY: The cause and prevention of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (also called aphthous ulcers or canker sores) are still unknown. This may be due in part to ignorance of the risk factors present in susceptible people. In this systematic review (PROSPERO record #CRD42019122214), we show that most of the risk factors for the disease are single nucleotide genetic polymorphisms in genes related to the functioning of immune system (TLR4, MMP9, E-selectin, IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha). Single nucleotide genetic polymorphisms do not constitute a modifiable risk. This indicates that, at least in part, susceptibility to recurrent aphthous stomatitis is hereditary, and that these factors cannot be modified.


RESUMEN: Aún se desconoce la causa y cómo prevenir la estomatitis aftosa recurrente (más conocida como aftas). En esta revisión sistemática (registro PROSPERO #CRD42019122214) mostramos que la mayoría de los factores de riesgo para la enfermedad son polimorfismos genéticos de un solo nucleótido en genes relacionados con el funcionamiento del sistema inmune (TLR4, MMP9, E- selectin, IL-1 beta y TNF-alfa). Los polimorfismos genéticos de un solo nucleótido no constituyen un riesgo modificable.Ello indica que, al menos en parte, la susceptibilidad para las aftas es hereditaria y que esos factores no pueden ser modificados.

BACKGROUND: While the small intestine is the main site of disease, many other organs are affected by celiac disease (CeD). Dental enamel defects (DED) are common in patients with CeD, and these are one of the indicators of CeD, even when no other symptom of CeD is present. Data on dental and oral cavity manifestations in Asian patients with CeD are scanty. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate dental and oral manifestations in Asian patients with CeD. METHODS: We recruited 118 patients with biopsy-confirmed CeD (36 treatment naïve and 82 on follow-up for at least 1 year on gluten-free diet [GFD]) and 40 controls. Diagnosis was made as per the standard criteria. Oral and dental manifestations were evaluated by a dental surgeon. The DED were evaluated according to Aine's criteria. RESULTS: Overall higher number of patients with CeD (66.9%), both treatment naïve (69.4%) and those on GFD (65.8%) had DED in comparison to controls (20%) (odds ratio, 8.1, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.4-19.2; p<0.001). Specific/bilaterally symmetrical DED were significantly higher in patients with CeD than controls. Recurrent aphthous ulcers were also significantly higher in patients with CeD. Approximately 80.6% and 63.4% treatment-naïve patients and those on GFD, respectively reported dry mouth sensation, which was significantly higher than the controls. CONCLUSION: Almost two-third of patients with CeD had DED. Physicians and dietitians caring for patients with CeD should be trained in identification of DED and other oral manifestations of CeD.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), a common oral mucosal disorder characterized by chronic, inflammatory, and ovoid ulcers, has a complex etiology. The purpose of the study was to investigate the specific dietary factors influencing the prevalence of RAS. METHODS: A total of 754 participants aged 18 to 59 years were enrolled in this descriptive cross-sectional study. An anonymous questionnaire was adopted to investigate the distribution of RAS, dietary factors, self-reported trigger factors, and therapeutic methods. RESULTS: Among all participants, the prevalence rate of RAS was 21.4%. Univariable analysis showed that fruit, dairy products, vegetables, and water, but not fried foods, fermented foods, spicy foods, and eggs, were preventive factors against RAS. After adjusting for age and sex, multivariable regression analysis suggested that fruit (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.430, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.218-0.847) and water (aOR = 0.294, 95% CI = 0.119-0.726) were protective factors against RAS. CONCLUSION: This study found that the consumption of fruit and water was negatively associated with RAS. These results imply a potential adjunctive and complementary role of food in RAS treatment and some feasible means of RAS prevention.

ABSTRACT: The relationship between recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), a common mucosal lesion, and cancer has not been demonstrated. This study investigated the risk for developing cancer in patients with RAS, based on data from Korea's National Health Insurance Sharing Service (NHISS). Nationwide population-based cohort data from 2005 to 2009 provided by the NHISS was used. The group diagnosed with RAS for 5 years and an undiagnosed control group were constructed through 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). The experimental design compared the incidence rate of a cancer diagnosis from 2010 to 2015 between these 2 groups. After identifying 13,808 people that met our inclusion criterion from a 1 million cohort group, 13,808 controls were included in the study through PSM. Among all cancers, pancreatic cancer had an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.26 (95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.57, P < .041). For the rest of the cancers, there was no significant incidence rate. RAS was associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in the analysis using large population-based cohort data. Further long-term follow-up studies are needed.

The ACE2 receptor, the binding sites for the COVID-19, is expressed abundantly in the oral cavity, raising the question of whether the mouth is a target for the virus in addition to organs such as kidneys and lungs. Recently, a flurry of individual case reports on oral manifestation of COVID-19 including ulceration, blistering lesions, and stomatitis were published. However, it is not clear whether the oral presentations that are not unique to the virus are indeed related to the virus and appear at a higher prevalence than in the general population. We used the i2b2 platform of hospital patient's registry to determine the odds ratio for COVID-19 in patients that were diagnosed with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, an entity restricted to the oral cavity. The overall odds ratio for COVID-19 in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis before adjustments was 14 and after adjustment for gender, race, and age was 13.9, 6.5, and 2.93, respectively. The odds ratio remained increased after adjustments of the comorbidities such as respiratory disease, endocrine disease, obesity, diabetes, circulatory disease, and smoking and was 3.66, 7.46, 4.6, 10.54, 7.37, and 7.52, respectively. When adjusted for recurrent aphthous stomatitis, the respiratory disease had an odd ratio of 8.56 to be associated with COVID-19. African American race and age-group 18-34 were additional significant risk factors. The present study has demonstrated a significant association between COVID-19 and RAS; however, additional longitudinal and laboratory studies are necessary to establish a cause and effect relationship between these 2 conditions.
